Registration and Travel | The Route

The Great Hucklow Fell Race has been running for more years than anyone can accurately remember. The first route was initially set up by Pete Tapping and Peter Miles. The current route reflects many changes over the years but it still largely follows that original route.

Like most village fell races, it is run by the local community. Our route needs a lot of marshals given the character of the land we run over. With registration team, results, refreshments, etc, it takes more than 30 volunteers turning up on the day to make it all work.

Few if any of the volunteers turn out for the love of fell running (few understand why you would do this to yourself on a Sunday morning). They turn out because its a community event, generally a pleasant morning helping a crowd of people do what they find rewarding, and to support an event which raises funds for good causes. Each year we contribute hundreds of pounds to good causes from your entry fees.

Community members also produce the renowned flapjacks available at the finish.

The event depends on the continued good will of around a dozen landowners who permit us to run the event over their land, with the route including sections with no legal right of way.

For years, the event has been supported by Accelerate, and has been part of Accelerate's Gritstone Series since it began.
